Recording methods

AMETHYST supports multiple concurrent recording methods to suit the needs and growth of the client. We can record any mixture of ISDN, VoIP, analogue, proprietary digital and radios at the same time. Trunk side recording is connecting on the ISDN, SIP or analogue lines coming into the PABX and Extension side recording is recording the digital, analogue and VoIP extensions behind the PABX. VoIP, Extension-, and Trunk-side methods employ a recording server with recording abilities.


All recordings taking place on our recording servers are encrypted at source. The encrypted recordings are moved to the Amethyst server in real time and copied to an archive location once a day with various checks to ensure that files are intact and represent the original file. Only software provided as part of your AMETHYST solution can decrypt our live as well as our archived recordings. The AMETHYST server is a secure black box environment, with various encryption methods used in the system.

Listening to live recordings

Supervisors access the recordings stored on the Amethyst server through an HTML5 compliant browser. There is no need to install extra supervisor applications on remote computers. Management is done via the web interface and does not require any physical access to the server.

Archiving methods

There are various archiving methods available with AMETHYST. The AMETHYST archive process makes an incremental copy of all data since the previous archive to the archive location. The Archive location can be a USB drive or a Network share or both. The Network share can be a NFS or a Windows share.

How archiving works

The Archive also makes a backup copy of the database and the configuration files. AMETHYST starts the archiving process each night at 21h00. All these files are encrypted to ensure that there can be no tampering. The purging facility allows Amethyst to remove recordings from the live system to ensure that the system doesn’t run out of disk space. Only recordings that have been successfully archived to all configured locations can be purged. No calls will be purged from the live system unless we have guaranteed a successful archive of the recording. Amethyst constantly monitors archiving media and the network, and handles failures to ensure reliable archiving of data at all times. If the media archive is filling up, an advance notice will be sent to the system administrator. No archiving will take place while drive is disconnected. AMETHYST keeps track of last successful archive and will continue from that point once the USB archive drive is available again.
The client has the option to make further backups of the archive as part of their normal backup procedures. If archived to Windows Share or NFS, the archive is already available on their network to make the backup of. If archive is to USB drive, the drive needs to be physically disconnected from the AMETHYST server and connect to the network to have access to make an additional backup of the archive.

Listening to archived recordings

To listen to archived recordings AMTListen software is required. The AMTListen software can installed on the archive machine or on any Windows PC and then access the archive location over the network. Once the archive location is accessible the folders with recordings will be visible. There is a folder for each day that had recordings. A daily login and password is required for listening to archived recordings. The username and password is accessible from the AMETHYST Administrator. If this server is not accessible our helpdesk would also be able to assist with a daily password. This login is only valid for that single day. The AMTListen software decrypts a copy of the recording for playback via any media player.
